Kelly Slater by Greg Gutierrez
Slater Pro: With all due respect, I’m wondering what’s going on with the Slater bashing I’ve been seeing in “The Bible of the Sport.” What’s with running the picture of the surfboard showing some bozo pissing on Slater’s name (while the coward hid behind the board)? I’m sure Kelly has a good sense of humor, but the picture sure seemed a bit rank. I’ve enclosed a more appropriate portrait of Kelly. In your comedy issue you folks claim that Slater is guilty of being a “snake,” “sucker punching” and using a “cheap trick” (that Beschen thing). Get real. I love what Sun Tzu wrote in the Art of War:
Just as water has no absolute position,
The strategy has no absolute direction
Those who can follow their opponents
Transformations to take triumph
May be called genius
If Slater wins five World Championships,
I will not be surprised. You go boy!
(editor’s note: as of early 2008, Kelly has won nine world titles)
