The Evening Doorman
In, The Evening Doorman, the protagonist, River, is the philosophical evening doorman at a five star hotel in Newport Beach. At the hotel he observes the eccentric, sordid, and sometimes beautiful behavior of the rich and famous. He spends his free time looking at homeless shelters searching for his heroin addict mother. He had been taken from her at the age of seven by child protective services. In the opening pages River crosses a violent biker and is hunted by him throughout the novel.
